YouTube Shuts Down Channels for Misleading AI Generated Movie Trailers

Video Sharing Platform YouTube Closes Channels Showing Misleading AI Generated Trailers for Hollywood Films

YouTube has also moved decisively in pulling down two popular channels that have been linked with the dissemination of misleading AI generated movie trailers. The two channels that were taken down are Screen Culture, which is located in India, and KH Studio, which is located in the United States, with a combined following of over two million subscribers and in excess of one billion views prior to removal.

It is reported that the individuals behind the accounts employed the use of artificial intelligence in the production of the trailers. The individuals merged the artificial intelligence with footage taken from other films that belonged to the copyright holders. The individuals did this in such a way that the trailers were perceived as authentic by most of the individuals watching. At first, the accounts attached disclaimers indicating that the work was that of a fan. However, when the disclaimers were stripped off, YouTube ruled that the accounts breached terms of service through the content.

Before the termination of the channels, they were already demonetized for violation of policies. After the removal of the disclaimers, the final step taken by YouTube was the termination of the accounts on grounds of violation of the rules of spam, deceptive content, as well as deceptive practices. A YouTube spokesperson verified that the termination of the accounts signifies the company's rising concern about content created artificially that imitates the valid content.

Such an initiative has come at a time when the use of content created with AI technology has continued to come under scrutiny in the entertainment sector. Video hosting sites such as YouTube are faced with the task of controlling such media content that uses intellectual property rights and other content that misrepresents itself as authentic.

YouTube’s action has also brought to the fore the difficulties involved in allowing innovation and responsible moderation of content in the era of artificial intelligence, making it clear that YouTube values its commitment to trust and user safety against deceptive content.
