Microsoft confirms some Windows 11 PCs can't shut down, hibernate after latest Patch Tuesday
This week, Microsoft launched its very first accumulation updates for Windows 11 and Windows 10 for the year 2026. For Windows 11, it was rolled out through KB5073455 for Windows 11 version 23H2 and through KB5074109 for Windows versions 25H2/24H2.
In most instances, Patch Tuesday updates normally come along with some flaws and errors that require addressing, and this is not different in this particular month as well. Microsoft has actually identified that Windows 11 23H2 computers cannot power down normally following the arrival of the most recent KB5073455 update. Fortunately, not all computers experience the same bug as Microsoft pointed out that the error occurs in computers that are using Secure Launch. Therefore, if the computer owner wishes to power down the machine, it restarts.
If you are wondering what it is, Windows Secure Launch is a Virtualization based Security (VBS) component introduced in Windows 10 that relies on hardware enforced Dynamic Root of Trust for Measurement (DRTM) in order to protect the integrity of the system during the boot process. Windows Secure Launch enables the system to boot on untrusted code at first but then transitions all of its CPUs to a trusted state in order to validate if the code is really not trustworthy. Microsoft calls such systems Secured core PCs.
The company has provided a workaround for the shut down issue. It writes:
“To turn off your computer, you need to open a Command Prompt and enter a specific command," Rohit Chawla explained in an email to The Christian Science Monitor. "To open a Command Prompt, you have to search for the word ‘cmd’ in the Search bar and click on the search results to open the program window.
shutdown /s /t 0 ""
This issue is related to hibernation, and some systems are not able to go to the state of hibernation; unfortunately, there is no workaround available for this issue, according to Microsoft. This issue is under investigation by Microsoft, and they have advised people to save their work before their system runs out of power, failing which they will lose all their work.
